How to Commission a Mountain Painting: A Guide for Mountain Lovers & Art Collectors
If you love mountains and art, you’re in the right place.
I help people transform their most meaningful mountain memories into custom mountain painting, artworks that capture not just a place, but a feeling you can return to every day.
I’m Cat Goward, a contemporary British artist specialising in mountain landscape paintings. I’ve created bespoke commissions for collectors across the world, turning personal adventures into timeless pieces of art.
Whether it’s the first peak you summited, a challenging trek you’ll never forget or a national park that feels like home, a commissioned mountain painting is more than wall décor - it’s a way to bring the outdoors into your home.
Having trekked through the Himalayas, Andes and Alps, I understand that every ridge, shadow, and contour tells a story. If you’re considering commissioning your own piece, here’s my simple 3-step process.

1. Choose Your Meaningful Mountain Moment
Every great custom mountain artwork begins with a story.
Do you have a favourite photo from a trek? A specific mountain or National Park you feel connected to or a mood you want to capture, like sunrise over snow-capped peaks?
Pro tip: High-resolution images are helpful, but not essential. Even a simple phone photo can work if it captures the essence of the moment. Using my experience as a mountain artist and trekker, I can fill in the gaps.

2. Define Your Style, Colours & Size
Your painting should feel completely personal to you and your space.
Style
Do you prefer abstract mountain paintings or impressionist landscapes or something in between?
Colour Palette
Choose a colour palette that reflects the mood you want to create - soft blues and greens for a calm, tranquil feel, deep darker tones for atmosphere and depth or vibrant pinks and oranges for a bold, contemporary statement piece.
Size
From smaller, intimate works to large-scale mountain paintings designed as statement pieces above a fireplace - size plays a key role!

3. Enjoy the Process
Commissioning a painting should feel inspiring and enjoyable, not overwhelming. Many of my clients tell me how much they loved the process and how fun it was to see their vision come to life.
When you work with me, we’ll explore your ideas together, from your vision and colour palette to the composition and ideal size for your space, refining every detail along the way.
I’ll also share regular updates, so you can watch your bespoke mountain painting gradually take shape on the canvas.
I’ve created custom mountain artworks of Mt Everest to Mount Kenya and the Cascade Mountains in USA (see picture below) to the Peak District in the UK. In each of these commissions the owner has felt deeply connected to the artwork.
