From Annapurna to the Living Room: A Himalayan Commission Inspired by a Lifetime of Adventure
The Story Behind the Commission
Earlier this year, I was contacted by a client looking for a truly meaningful gift for her father's 70th birthday.
Rather than another gadget or bottle of whisky, she wanted something that would reconnect him with one of the most important chapters of his life: his years spent exploring the Himalayas.
As we spoke, she told me stories of his adventures in Nepal. Long days spent trekking beneath towering snow-capped peaks. Early starts before sunrise to catch the first light hitting the mountains. Even decades later, those memories remained some of the most vivid and cherished of his life.
When she came across my painting Annapurna in Blue, she immediately thought of him.
"It reminded me of the way he talks about the mountains," she explained. "Calm, vast and almost dreamlike."
Together, we decided to create a bespoke painting that would capture those memories and transform them into a lasting piece of art.
Commissioned painting of the Himalayas
The Brief
The commission was for a 24" x 30" deep-edge canvas.
The brief was beautifully simple:
Inspired by the Annapurna and Everest regions
Contemporary and minimalist in style
Rich blue colour palette
Snow-capped peaks appearing to float above the clouds
A feeling of peace, space and altitude
Rather than focusing on a specific summit, the goal was to capture the emotion of being in the Himalayas, that feeling of standing high above the world, surrounded by endless layers of mountains disappearing into the distance.
Recreating the Feeling of the Himalayas
One of the things that fascinates me about the Himalayas is their sense of scale.
No photograph can truly convey the experience of standing amongst mountains that seem to stretch endlessly towards the horizon.
To recreate that feeling, I worked with a restrained palette of deep ultra-marine blues and soft atmospheric tones. Layers of paint were built gradually before using palette knives and impasto techniques to carve out the snow-covered peaks.
The composition was designed to create a sense of stillness and distance, allowing the eye to travel across the mountain range in the same way it might during a long day on the trail.
Rather than painting every detail, I focused on the mood and memory of the landscape.

The Finished Painting
The final artwork captures a line of floating Himalayan peaks emerging through layers of blue atmosphere.
The painting is both bold and calming a contemporary interpretation of one of the world's most iconic mountain regions.
Most importantly, it became a window back to a lifetime of adventure.
“It was the perfect 70th birthday present for my Dad. Every time he looks at it, it takes him back to his mountaineering adventures.”
