From Mountain Memories to Contemporary Art: A Mount Kenya Commission for a Special Birthday
When a mountain lover based in Dubai wanted to surprise her husband with a truly personal birthday gift, she commissioned a bespoke painting of Mount Kenya. Having climbed the mountain twice, she wanted a contemporary mountain painting that would capture both the scale of the landscape and the memories of his adventures.
Some mountain memories stay with you forever.
After discovering my contemporary mountain artwork online, she was particularly drawn to Annapurna in Rose, part of the INTO THIN AIR collection. She loved its minimalist composition, soft colour palette and the way the mountain itself became the focal point. Her brief was simple: create something with the same contemporary feel, but inspired by Mount Kenya.

Planning the Composition
The commission was to be painted on a large 30 × 40 inch deep-edge canvas, allowing the mountain to make a bold statement.
The customer sent over several photographs from the climbs, and I began by producing a series of charcoal composition sketches. Rather than recreating the photographs exactly, the aim was to create a painting that captured the emotion of the experience.
We agreed that Mount Kenya should completely dominate the composition.
There would be no foreground distractions - no trees, rolling hills or additional landscape elements. Instead, the viewer's eye would be drawn immediately to the mountain itself, just as it is when you stand beneath its towering peaks.

Capturing the Power of Mount Kenya
One of the most striking features of Mount Kenya is the way the light catches its snow-covered summits.
I wanted those illuminated peaks to become the heart of the painting.
Using layers of rich blues contrasted with vibrant pinks and warm highlights, I built a palette that echoed the atmosphere of Annapurna in Rose while creating something unique to Mount Kenya.
The minimalist composition allowed the mountain's scale and strength to speak for themselves. Looking up at the painting, I wanted the viewer to experience the same sense of awe you feel when standing at the base of such an immense landscape.

The Finished Painting
The completed painting is bold, contemporary and full of energy.
The glowing peaks command attention against the deeper tones of the surrounding mountain, creating a dramatic contrast that immediately draws the eye.
Once the painting was complete, I sent photographs to the client for approval.
Her response made my day:
““WOW, it’s beautiful. We absolutely love it!””
As an artist, there is nothing more rewarding than hearing that a painting has captured exactly what a client had hoped for.
Delivered to Dubai
After allowing the oil painting to cure, it was carefully packaged and shipped from the UK to Dubai in time for the birthday celebration.
The gift was a success, and most importantly, her husband was delighted with the painting - a lasting reminder of two unforgettable climbs on Mount Kenya.
